H.G. Bishop Shenouda
On September 30, 1962, Pope Kyrillos VI (Cyril the Sixth) ordained Fr. Antonious El Syriani as Bishop Shenouda. He was the first Bishop to be devoted for the Christian Education in the history of the Coptic Church. He also became the dean of the Theological Seminary in Egypt. Due to his leadership style and popularity as an eloquent speaker and gifted teacher, enrolment of full time and part time students had increased considerably. Women were motivated and encouraged to join theological studies and were admitted to the seminary.

On November 14, 1971, at the Cathedral of St. Mark in Cairo, His Holiness Pope Shenouda III was enthroned as the 117th Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of the St. Mark. He continued his education role and became the first Patriarch of Alexandria since the fifth century to have been the Dean of the Theological Seminary. Pope Shenouda expanded the ministry of Christian education by establishing several seminaries in Egypt and abroad. On November 29, 1993, he officially opened the Institute of Pastoral Care. His Holiness was a gifted writer, author of hundreds of books and countless sermons. He visited more than 30 foreign visits including the first by Coptic Pope to the USA in 1977.

History recorded that His Holiness was a humanitarian who made countless pastoral visits outside Egypt. He was the first Pope in the history of the Coptic Orthodox Church to visit the United States. The longest tour took place from August to December 1989, when he made historic visits to all the Coptic Churches in the United States after he being released from exile in January,1985. As a chief defender of the faith and a hero of human rights, he was warmly and enthusiastically welcomed by thousands of the Copts wherever he went in Europe, United States, Canada, and Australia. During this trip he established new Churches, consecrated alters, baptized hundreds of children, ordained countless deacons, taught, preached, and delivered many lectures at seminaries and universities. He opened theological seminaries in New Jersey and in Los Angeles.
